Everything you need to know about Horsepower
There are a lot of people who do not actually know what horsepower means. Horsepower can be defined as the amount of work or energy, which is required in order to raise a weight of thirty three thousand pounds to a height of one foot in the space of only one minute or create a force which is equal to doing that amount of work. The horsepower might be needed at various different power points throughout the engine and the calculation has to be appropriate. The horsepower is generated by the engine, as is indicated by the power within the cylinders and this may not be the actual power that is used to utilise the work as there may be a friction of the engine which has to be taken into consideration. There is also brake horsepower, which is actually the horsepower that is delivered to the shaft of the engine, and this can be used for work in the form of effective horsepower.
Indicated Horsepower
The term indicated horsepower represents the power, which is developed within the engine cylinder and this is obtained from the level pressure, which is in the cylinders. This level of pressure is obtained from an indicator that reflects the pressure of the cylinders. The indicated horsepower does not actually represent the power, which is actually useful.
Brake Horsepower
The brake horsepower is the actual horsepower, which is delivered to the shaft of the engine. This is equal to the indicated horsepower less the level of friction, which is within the engine. Brake horsepower is useful and it is often referred to as shaft horsepower.
Effective Horsepower
The term effective horsepower is the power converted to useful work. In the case of a vehicle this is the power actually turned into forward motion. The difference between the indicated horsepower and the effective horsepower can sometimes be as much as twenty five per cent.
