Excavation Equipment

Within the science of archaeology, you will find a very well known term that is excavation. The most basic way in which one can describe this term is to say that it is all to do with digging but this is a very literal and overall description of the term. Working with excavation is normally a seasonal job and can take place over a period of many years on one or more excavation and archaeological sites.

Different areas of excavation will require different methods of the term and the industry as a whole is a rather large one with more techniques and approaches than a person may first like to admit. There are issues that are practical and ecological among other reasons to determine exactly where an excavation task can take place and many sites have been abandoned or left alone in the first place because of these reasons.

As a generalization the working of excavation is the removal of a top layer of material, usually soil by way of using a machine or other excavation equipment. Once this top layer has been removed there may be remnants of other civilizations and other such things that archaeologists may find to be useful or interesting but if the excavation site is left for a period of time or the top layer not completely removed, there may still be another layer that will need to be worked through that may be too delicate for the excavation equipment to be used for.

Scaled and exact plans are need for any excavation project and the main reason for this is the area in which the dig is to take place. Urban areas may have layers upon layers of human debris of various forms and other such things including piping that may need to be worked around whereas more rural areas will have archaeological interest just under the top layer, which is to be removed. Tape measures, grids and various other materials will be needed to draw up these detailed plans and these days it would appear to be more popular to use an electronic total station.

Archaeologists are not the only people that may need to use excavation machinery. Houses and trenches can be dug with the same machines, in the same way that roads may be built and the term excavation is basically a generalized term for any materials that needs to be dug away.

There are various forms of heavy machinery that will be used in an excavation project and these may include backhoes or excavators themselves. The latter is the most popular as it has the ability to remove a large amount of material in a short time frame.

Common sense is essential with regards to excavation work and this applies to any excavation project. Holes and trenches will require a trench box before it is deemed safe for a person to go down there.

Excavation has been around for many years in the roads and streets around us as well as digging up potentially important artifacts. Running the machinery correctly takes practice and training and without it, a person does not have the skills needed to complete the task safely and quickly.
