Dump Trucks
For the transportation of sand, gravel and dirt or other loose materials that are present on construction sites, dump trucks or production trucks can be used. Typically, they will be operated by a hydraulically powered box bed, which is hinged to the rear of the vehicle, and the front of this is placed in such a way that the contents can be dumped onto the ground after moving.
There are several different configurations of dump trucks and each of them has its own purpose on a construction site.
Standard dump trucks have a body that is generally mounted onto a frame and has a full truck chassis. Again, hydraulically powered, the ram lift raises the main body of the dump truck and this ram lift is situated at the front of the bulkhead. There are normally one or more rear axles and only one at the front and this will normally have dual wheels sat on either side. The most common of the different configurations for the standard dump truck are the ten wheeler and also the six wheeler.
A transfer dump truck is a rather noisy dump truck, which is easily recognized by this distinct noise. There is a separate trailer accompanying this dump truck and this can be used to transport gravel, sand and dirt, all of which are loaded into the trailer and then moved to the destination of choice. The container for the various materials is normally called an aggregate container or a B Box and a motor electrically powers this. This part rides on wheels and is wheeled on or off the trailer and onto the main dump box.
A dump truck that is known as a semi trailer end is more of a tractor and trailer if the truth were told and it is actually the trailer section of this dump truck that contains the hydraulically powered hoist. This is normally a tractor with three axles and it is used to pull a trailer, which has two axles. This enables quicker and more rapid unloading of the contents.
The semi trailer bottom style dump truck is again the three-axle tractor that pulls a two-axle trailer. The actual belly or mid frame of the trailer has a dump gate that is shaped like a clam and one of the biggest benefits of using this type of dump truck is the ability to unload the various contents into a wind row. It is also able to perform reverse manoeuvres unlike other tractor and trailer combinations.
The triple and double trailers are again two axle tractors that pull an additional trailer alongside a semi axle semi trailer. One of the main advantages to this type of dump truck is the ability to put the material from the truck into windrows without having to leave the truck or stop it. However, with this comes a disadvantage, there are well known problems with regards to reversing in this vehicle.
The Side dump trucks involve a three-axle trailer pulling a semi trailer that has two axles. Hydraulically powered rams enable the trailer to be tilted to the side to enable the contents to fall out either to the left or right of the main body. These dump trucks carry more weight than most and also allow for faster unloading of the contents. They are also less likely to tip onto their sides unlike some other dump trucks and the length of them is the main reasoning behind this plus the better maneuverability.
Off road dump trucks do exactly as the name suggests move materials that are off road. These are rather large and heavy constructive machines that move heavy dirt and other materials normally around mining areas and other similar places.
