Caterpillar Construction Equipment
The Caterpillar Incorporated Company is based in the United States of America in Peoria, Illinois. This company is more commonly referred to as CAT and it is a name that is recognised all across the world as being one of the biggest and best manufacturers of large machinery including gas turbines, natural gas engines and construction equipment. The CAT machinery are easily recognised by their bright yellow paint.
History of CAT
Benjamin Bolt and Daniel Best started the CAT Company in the late nineteenth century whilst they were experimenting with the different benefits that steam tractors had on farms. Prior to 1925 the Bolt family had been the pioneers between the tractors that operate on tracks and also the engines that were powered by gasoline. Once the two parties started the CAT company it grew at a rapid rate and in 1950 they started to export the machines as well and since then the company just grew in strength to be the multi million pound company that it is today.
The CAT Company has produced a wide range of machines, which range from hydraulics excavators to track style tractors, wheeled loaders and tractors. They make machines with diesel engines and gasoline engines so there is a machine that is capable of doing just about every job that you are ever likely to come across.
CAT Sales
The CAT Company sells about half of their machines to countries outside of the United States of America and the machines are now sold in over two hundred different countries. The CAT Company has access to a worldwide network, which consists of more than two hundred dealers, and sixty-three of these are within the United States of America. The CAT Company have some manufacturing networks, which are in Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, India and the United Kingdom.
Labour
Due to the huge strike that happened in 1980 the CAT Company nearly went out of business but they managed to survive which was also good considering that at the same time the demand levels were also reduced. In the 1990’s CAT suffered another strike but again it managed to get back on its feet, so with the economy being what it is today this is probably one of the safest companies to be working for as they have already shown that they are strong enough to get through rough times and get back on their feet.
It was not long after the strikes of the 1990’s that the company decided to adopt the “6 Sigma” management quality regime so that they were able to identify ways to reduce the amount of costs they had by reducing the amount of inventory that they had. This process also allowed them to be able to identify and correct any problems before they got out of hand and this maintained the standard of the CAT machines. This process is possible one of the things that has led to CAT being such as strong company.
