Buying 18G Tips

September 7th, 2010 | Tags:

I have just bought an 18G this summer. I have plenty of experience with the 800/8000 4 wheel tractors and wanted a G series because the wheel hub to axial mounting upgrade eliminated chucking ware.

Paid $500, no mower, worn-out front tires, non-running “rebuilt” motor, and many botched repairs to undo.

Spent $20 in parts to fix the rebuilt motor botches, turned up tapered inserts so the tie-rod studs can be tightened into the front axial pivots, replace the front tires with donated (thinner) 8000 tires, and bought a battery and two headlight sealed beams, which seem to be as expensive as a full size sealed beam! I consider the purchase price and time to repair very reasonable. And watching ebay sales most running G series seem to top out at $1500 +/-.

This tractor is a luxury to mow with compared with the 800 series because of its sprung seat, longer wheel base, and rear wheels that do not chuck. New, in the 80′s, it was a $8K tractor!

Send along your wife’s reasons for resisting the purchase, and I’ll ask my wife if she might be willing to counter point her reasons.

By the tractor you have found, even if the asking price is non-negotiable, I suspect the purchase will never cause buyers remorse.
