The national plowing championship started out over 77 years ago from very humble origins it was started by Dennis Alan a Wexford TD after he had a debate with his friend JJ Bergen over which of their counties have produced the better ploughmen both men agreed that the only way to settle this argument was to have a plowing competition and so began the first ever national plowing competition which was held in a tie County Kildare in 1931.
