Farm Machinery Show has the wow factor

The 2009 Farm Machinery Show looms large on the event horizon. This year’s instalment, the 11th such show, will once again be held at the Punchestown Event Centre in Naas, which has served as the venue since 2003.

Despite the recession in the wider economy, there will be a bumper turnout of agricultural machines and manufacturers for the 2009 show — all exhibiting their wares. Most major manufacturers of tractors and farm machinery will be present. In fact, one of the attractions of the Farm Machinery Show is the total lack of duplication of machinery or equipment. In other words, there’s only one of every machine at the show. This helps to ensure that the best possible use is made of the show’s floor area.

The Farm Machinery Show 2009 will open its doors to the public on Tuesday, February 3, at 10am and it runs through until Thursday, February 5, when it finishes at 6pm. The entry fee remains at €15 per person. On Wednesday, there will be a late evening opening, when the show runs until 8pm.

This year, like 2007, the organisers will once again be using the large single-span event centre building in addition to a big marquee structure. The new, solid-sided 120m long marquee is the biggest in Ireland. It will be heated for the duration of the show using Irish farmer produced bio-diesel. In all, the show will stretch across 10,000 square metres of floor space, and will also feature a limited outdoor display area, designed to house larger machines that might otherwise crowd an indoor stand.

Companies exhibiting at this year’s show will have a host of new machines on display, many for the first time in this country. For example, there will reportedly be several new tractor introductions from Case IH, Claas, Deutz-Fahr, John Deere, Fendt, Hurlimann, JCB, Kioti, Kubota, Lamborghini, Landini, McCormick, Massey Ferguson, New Holland, Same, Ursus and Valtra.

On the farm machinery front there will be plenty to trawl through. For example, you’ll find no fewer than 19 different brands of mechanical and pneumatic seeders, 10 different brands of balers and 11 different brands of ploughs. From sprayers to hedge cutters, forage harvesters to potato equipment, there promises to be something for everyone.

The 2009 Farm Machinery Show will also be bristling with silage and grass machinery — from small, mounted mowers right up to the latest self-propelled foragers. Punters will also have a chance to inspect the latest silage wagons at close quarters.

As ever, the show will be supported by a number of financial institutions. Four specialised agricultural accounting and management software development companies — namely ASC software, Farmade Management systems, Patchwork Technology and Ibcos Computers — will be present.

“More than at other shows in the past, this year almost every company exhibiting will have something new to offer. The highlights will be the new tractor models, some of which will be seen here for the first time at the show,” said show committee chairman, Simon Cross.

The Farm Machinery Show is organised by the FTMTA (Farm Tractor and Machinery Trade Association) for farmers and contractors. The event boasts full catering facilities on site. Car parking is free.

In addition, the FTMTA will run a series of Skillnet Seminars during the show. There will be a seminar on a different topic held each day.

There are a lot of different opinions on what should actually be classed as an earth-moving machine and there is a lot of different equipment that falls within in the category. Some of the equipment within the category includes dump trucks, loaders, backhoe loaders and excavators.

There has been a massive increase in productivity as a result of all the different changes that have been made. Some of the Caterpillar machines are the most powerful and they are able to work at the fastest pace so these are one of the most popular makes for excavation machines. Although the excavators are now more powerful they have actually also reduced the amount of impact that they are having on the environment.

The Electronics

A lot of the newer machines have a lot of electronics in them and some of them have an electronic optimising machine that helps to power the engine whilst reducing the transmission levels as well as the fuel consumption level whilst having a much bigger hydraulic system.

The Caterpillar G series is a prime example of the modern excavation machine because it was like a loader on wheels that had a powershift that was controlled using electronics. All of the different autoshift and powershifts that are on the machines are capable of operating at a different capacity.

Level of Comfort

Within the excavation industry the good machine operators are getting harder to find so the different manufacturers are trying to assist in this problem by maximising the comfort level of the various machines so they are aiming to make machines that are quicker and better at doing the jobs that they are required to do whilst also maximising the level of comfort that is in the machine for the operator. The new designs of the cabs allow the operator to have better visibility with reduced noise levels and fewer vibrations.

Easy Maintenance

Most of the new machinery involves a lot of electronics, which will work to make the job easier. The electronics allow the machine to be constantly monitored for problems, which means that they are easier to maintain and also they are safer from a health and safety point of view.

The Good Things About The Changes

If you take time to compare the old machinery with the machinery that is used these days you will see that there is a very large amount of changes that have been made and the machinery that is used today is far better. The machinery that was used in the past relied very much on the skill of the operator however this is not the case anymore.

A Combine Harvester is a piece of heavy machinery that is used in the process of cutting things to length and for logging as well as for felling, cutting and buckling of trees. It is normal practice for the harvester to be used along with other machinery to haul logs and trees to an area on the roadside where they can be lifted.

The harvesters were first developed in Sweden and Finland and nowadays the harvesters are used for all the tree felling. The harvesters work best on rough terrain so they are ideal for cutting and clearing in a forest environment due to the steep gradients however in some conditions it is best to use chain saws to cut the trees down. The main manufacturers of the harvester machines are John Deere who makes the Timberjack and Komatsu who make the Valmet.

It is common for the harvesters to be built on a robust vehicle that can cope with all different terrains and these can be either tracked or wheeled. On some occasions the vehicles can be articulated which allows the machine to turn around completely. When the vehicle is articulated it will have a boom similar to that of the excavator. There are some harvesters that have been specially adapted so that they can also do the work of an excavator.

The most common harvesters consist of a chain saw that is capable of sawing down the trees and it is also useful for cutting the trees to the length that they are required. The chain saw within the harvester is operated by the hydraulic engine, which is also a two stroke robust engine. The harvesters will probably have two curved knifes which will grasp around the trunk in order to remove branches. It is also very common for the harvester to have two feed rollers, which reach and grip the tree and the wheels on the system will roll to enable the tree to be embraced by the harvester. There is usually another two knifes as well and these are used for de-limbing the trees.

All of these different tools work together and they are controlled by the operator who works within the cab of the vehicle. The operator uses a sort of computer system in order to operate the different mechanical devices all from the comfort of the cab. The computerised controls are all reasonably easy to operate. The computerised system also makes it a lot easier to cut the tress to the size that is required because the computer can be programmed with the exact size required.

The harvesters that are able to cut trees with a diameter of nine hundred millimetres and the tools are built onto vehicles that weigh up to about twenty tonnes and have a boom that is able to reach out to ten meters in radius. The vehicles that are bigger and heavier do more damage to the forest so one that has a bigger arm will be better as it will allow more trees to be felled from the one position.
