MASSEY FERGUSON TRACTORS – THE HISTORY

The Massey Ferguson Company was founded in 1847 in Newcastle, Ontario by Daniel Massey. The company initially built simple farm implements.

In 1879 the company was moved to Toronto and was taken over and expanded by Hart Almerrin Massey, Daniels eldest son who then renamed it the Massey Manufacturing Co. It did not take long for the company to become one of the main employers in the town. The company also started to sell their goods internationally.

Through extensive marketing and advertising campaigns the company became a well-known brand in Canada and worldwide. In 1891 the company merged with A Harris Son & Co Limited and the company changed its name to Massey Harris Co. The company became the biggest agricultural equipment producer in the British Empire. In 1910 the company then joined with the Johnson Harvester Company which was located in Batavia New York, this then made the company one of the largest multinational companies.

In the 1930s the company produced the first combine harvester. The Massey Harris Company also manufactured one of the world’s first four-wheel drive tractors.

The sons of Hart Massey were also involved in the business and eventually ran the business and this was the last generation of the Massey’s to run the business. In 1953 the Ferguson Company merged with the Massey Harris Company and became known as the Massey Harris Ferguson Company before it was taken over again in 1958 and became, as it is known today, as the Massey Ferguson Company.

The Massey Ferguson tractor is produced by the Massey Ferguson Limited Company. This company is one of the main producers of agricultural equipment. The Massey Ferguson Limited Company is based in England. The company is now known by the brand name of AGCO. The Massey Ferguson is one of the main sellers of tractors and farming machinery.
