Vintage Tractors, an overview

The invention of the combustion engine changed the farming world with the introduction of the tractor, replacing the old labour intensive way of using horses and steam. The very early tractors were very basic with a mounted stationery engine, which was used to power a chassis with wheels that was controlled via a chain. The Fordson tractor was produced in 1917 and this tractor was able to do things at a much lower cost and with less labour. By the early 1920’s the Fordson tractor was working in over seventy five per cent of farms. The International, Case, Ferguson, John Deere and David Brown to name a few soon, followed the invention of the Fordson tractor.

The David Brown tractors were invented in 1913 by the Huddersfield Company. The Huddersfield Company also produced gearboxes and engines for the Ferguson tractors. The production of these engines stopped in 1939 because the Ferguson Company was looking to cut costs whilst improving the power.
