Front Loader Equipment Overview
The front loader, also know as the bucket loader, front-end loader, shovel or scoop loader is a type of tractor that is used to move materials around. The machine is normally wheeled and has a tilting bucket that is rather square in shape and also very wide and this is on the end of moveable arms.
The actual loader part of the tractor itself can be removable but sometimes it is also a permanent fixture and when the bucket can be removed, it can be replaced with attachments such as a hydraulically powered bucket or forks for more versatility.
The larger front loaders normally only have the front bucket attached and these are like the Volvo L120E and also the Caterpillar 950G, both well known names with regards to construction. Smaller front loaders are normally equipped with a small backhoe at the reverse of the machine and these are very often called loader backhoes or backhoe loaders.
Front loaders are normally used for loading materials and other such things onto vehicles such as trucks. These materials could be rubble, soil, sand, dirt and other things. They are very versatile machines and can also dig holes so that piping can be laid but this is not their best feature as they are unable to dig very deep down. The backhoe is better for this as it can dig deeper than the level that their wheels will go to.
Front loaders have a deeper bucket than backhoe loaders and 3-4 cubic meters of materials such as dirt can be stored within it. Generally the loaders are not primarily known for their excavation abilities and they are most used for the transportation of materials rather than digging it up.
Construction areas are usually the prime spot for front loaders and this is mainly due to the fact that when building materials need to be transported or rubble needs to be removed, the loader can complete the task with ease and in a shorter time scale. Snow removal is also another great job for the front loader as the bucket works in much the same way as a snowplough. The plough can either be moved to the side of the road or lifted and placed into dump trucks, which will then remove it from the scene.
Most front loaders have wheels rather than tracks, setting them aside from bulldozers and other construction vehicles. These wheels generally provide an increase in speed and also mobility for the vehicle and do not have as much damage associated with them as tracks do on paved roads and other such places.
Large front loaders do not usually use automotive steering mechanisms and this is what sets it aside from most tractors and backhoes, which do. The front and rear axles will have a hydraulically powered actuated pivot point and this is otherwise known and referred to as articulated steering. This allows for a much heavier weight to be carried.
Another reason why the articulated steering of a front loader will come in handy is for the ways in which the machinery can move. The load can be moved in an arc formation, and this after the machine has been positioned which allows for better placement of dumping loads. However, this does come with an increased risk of tipping especially if the heavy load has been lifted far up into the air.
