The history of Fordson Tractors
The first Fordson Tractor ever produced is on display at the Henry Ford museum. Joseph Galamb was the chief engineer that produced this tractor in 1907. The Fordson Tractor Company was first started in 1903, and despite a rocky start, the company managed to make its name through the production of the Model T, which was first produced in 1908. The Model T was produced between 1908 and 1927. The company sold more than fifteen million units of the Model T.
Ford was the son of a farmer and he understood exactly what farmers needed and he used this knowledge to introduce automotive engines that could help the farming community worldwide. He first started experimenting with new ideas in 1907 but his ideas were greatly hampered by the board of directors who could not understand what he was trying to do and they did not feel that the company could benefit from these. Despite this, Ford was determined that he was going to put his idea into production. Ford replaced his main engineer, Joseph Galamb with Eugene Farkas. The Ford Motor Company and the directors were still unwilling to back Ford’s idea and so Ford decided to set up a separate company and called it Henry Ford & Son and Henry Ford had the main control over this business.
There were several different types of Fordson tractors and these included the Fordson Model F, Fordson Model N, Fordson Dexta, Fordson All Around, Fordson Power Major, Fordson Super Major and a Fordson Super Dexta.
The Fordson Model F was a 20 horsepower engine and this was able to deliver a 10 horsepower drawbar. The Fordson Model F was produced in America between 1917 and 1928 and then it was produced in Ireland between 1919 and 1922.
The Fordson Model N was a 27 horsepower four-cylinder engine and this was able to deliver a 13 horsepower drawbar. The Fordson Model N was produced in Ireland between 1929 and 1932 and then production was moved to Dagenham in England and they were produced here between 1933 and 1945.
During the period 1928 and 1939 the company lost some of their dominance in the American tractor market. This was caused mainly by the increase in production costs and also the higher costs of importing the tractors to various countries in the world.
The Fordson All Around, which was also commonly referred to as the Fordson Row Crop was modelled on the Fordson Model N. The Production of the Fordson All Around was started in 1937 in the Dagenham factory.
The Fordson New Major, despite being rather bulky, was one of the most successful tractors for Fordson. This tractor featured a three-cyclinder diesel engine and was targeted at the small farm equipment market. These tractors were produced between 1957 and 1961 in the Dagenham factory.
It is still possible to get some original Fordson tractor parts but there are also a lot of modern tractor parts that can be used on the Fordson tractors. There are many people now collecting vintage Fordson tractors.
